  4. I have two horses. Everything is fine until I try to bring them in from their paddock. One has to stay in the paddock until I bring in the other. Then I come back for the second. However, when they realize it is time to go in, problems begin. I will have one on a lead line and open the gate; the other will come up and try to push through. Neither one wants to be the one that has to wait. Do you have any suggestions on how I can teach them to be calm and wait? Published: June 18, 2009
  5. I brought home two horses (both previously companions of each other) from a boarding and training facility. Since being moved to our property, the horse I have had the most experience working with (lunging, riding, ground manners) is bonding the least to both my husband and me. He accepts very little touching and prefers to shy away. If I try to catch him, he initiates an escape plan. The horse I have had the least amount of experience with is very personable and willing (follows you everywhere, allows himself to be groomed, lunged, etc.). Also, when I took the second horse out of the paddock for lunging, the first horse threw a fit and ran around, bucking and complaining. The second horse was never out of sight of the first horse. The person selling the horses thought keeping these two horses together would be a good idea, but I am having second thoughts. Any suggestions? Published: June 18, 2009

  12. I have a mare who has been very loving, but when the weather changed from very warm to cold, her mood seems to have changed. She doesn't want to be touched and gets very jumpy and nervous. Could it be the weather? Nothing else has changed. Published: May 23, 2008
  13. How do you train a horse with bad ground manners, such as walking on you, nibbling, and just generally being disrespectful and pushy? Published: May 23, 2008
  14. I have a 1½-year-old Shetland pony and recently got a 3-year-old female miniature donkey. The pony has been gelded. I am having problems with the pony chasing and biting at the donkey whenever someone goes near her. He also doesn't share well when it comes to eating hay. Is this something that they will work out over time? They have been together for about three weeks. Published: May 23, 2008
  15. Every month around the 13th or 14th of the month, my mare starts to lose interest in her feed and starts to lie down more frequently. By the 15th or 16th, she won't eat her evening meal and seems uninterested in everything but sleeping and hip sitting. I usually end up getting her up and putting her in a stall so she can sleep undisturbed. Most recently, however, on the 15th of March she had shooting diarrhea and acted "off" in the early evening. Her temperature was normal (100.8), and she didn't have any flags on her physical exam other than the wet diarrhea and that she was also butt pressing on the stall wall. We administered a biosponge, and she was eating and acting brighter several hours later. Could this all be from her heat cycle? If so, should I still breed her as I intended? If she acts like this from being in heat, how will she handle labor pains and birth? I have dealt with many mares, but none quite like her. Published: May 23, 2008
  16. What are some behavior changes I can make to increase my wealth? Published: March 21, 2008
  17. Our four year old mare constantly jumps out of her 20 acre pasture which she shares with three geldings. The fencing is 4 feet high in most areas but she has also jumped over the areas which are five feet. Would a martingale type of strap work to keep her from jumping over the pasture fence? How can I keep her in the pasture? The pasture itself is in good shape with lush grass. Published: January 09, 2008
  18. What is the best way to catch and halter a horse in the pasture? Published: January 09, 2008
