  12. My daughter has mentioned lately that her 11-year-old Trakhener mare has been a little resistant when having her girth tightened. Three days ago and then today the mare dropped to the ground and was difficult in getting up once her girth was put on. The girth is never tightened right from the start but rather is tightened in stages. We are wondering if these symptoms are significant. Updated: January 19, 2010
  13. My horse is being boarded in a pasture with a couple of aggressive mares that won't let him eat hay with the rest of them. They continue to chase him away. Is it a bad situation for him? He is a four-year-old gelding. I just purchased him a month ago, and he is not trained. He has not been totally desensitized, and I wonder if his being with these mares will undo any desensitizing that I have done with him. Updated: January 13, 2010
  14. The six-year-old dressage mare with which we are working has started to exhibit possible signs of cycling when under saddle. She kicks out when my daughter puts her leg on for the left bend and occasionally backs up in the midst of riding as if she's "had enough." With persistence, she has worked through these spots. She is a sweet mare who makes her best effort. We want to make her more comfortable, as we know from her owner that this imitates behavior she exhibited last year as the days became longer. Regumate was tried but not successful. Do you have another recommendation? Also, how do horses ovulate? Are they like humans who ovulate from left to right ovary alternately with each cycle? And can they feel pain with ovulation or discomfort when they cycle? Updated: January 11, 2010
  15. Is it advisable to have one horse if there is only one person to ride at a time, or can it work with keeping two horses if they are extremely bonded to each other? My one horse is a 10-year-old mare, and the other horse is a two-year-old untrained filly. I will have her professionally trained. Is it best to sell her, or can it be worked out? My concern is if I take one horse out, they go into a frenzy being separated. Updated: January 11, 2010
  16. My pony kicks me when I put on the saddle. I just got him, but he has been ridden before. I don't know what to do. I really would like to ride him next spring. Updated: January 11, 2010
  17. I live in northern Florida. I have had my mare a year and a half approximately. In December 2008, she started behaving badly, culminating in an accident where she reared, and I fell off. This year a trainer has been highly involved. The mare has been doing quite well, although she is a very dominant alpha mare. However, starting in December 2009, she started being difficult again. This week she was aggressive when the trainer went to get her from the paddock. When she went to ride her, the mare refused to go forward (same thing as last year). She then reared up. The timing is identical to last year. Is it possible that December/January is a transitional period here in Florida and that this behavior is due to her getting ready to go into heat? My trainer thinks she should be donated and can't be sold. I purchased her last year for $18,000. I want to reveal her background but try to sell her. I want to see if I can find the cause of this behavior. Updated: January 11, 2010

  27. I have two horses. Everything is fine until I try to bring them in from their paddock. One has to stay in the paddock until I bring in the other. Then I come back for the second. However, when they realize it is time to go in, problems begin. I will have one on a lead line and open the gate; the other will come up and try to push through. Neither one wants to be the one that has to wait. Do you have any suggestions on how I can teach them to be calm and wait? Updated: June 18, 2009
  28. I brought home two horses (both previously companions of each other) from a boarding and training facility. Since being moved to our property, the horse I have had the most experience working with (lunging, riding, ground manners) is bonding the least to both my husband and me. He accepts very little touching and prefers to shy away. If I try to catch him, he initiates an escape plan. The horse I have had the least amount of experience with is very personable and willing (follows you everywhere, allows himself to be groomed, lunged, etc.). Also, when I took the second horse out of the paddock for lunging, the first horse threw a fit and ran around, bucking and complaining. The second horse was never out of sight of the first horse. The person selling the horses thought keeping these two horses together would be a good idea, but I am having second thoughts. Any suggestions? Updated: June 18, 2009
