The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Center for Viticulture and Small Fruit Research and the FAMU/USDA/ARS Center for Biological Control extend a special invitation to families and friends throughout the Tallahassee community and surrounding counties, and beyond, to come and enjoy a day of flavorful activities at the eighth annual FAMU Grape Harvest Festival on Saturday, August 22, 2009, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The festival site is located at 6505 Mahan Drive (Highway 90 East), Tallahassee, Florida. The Grape Harvest Festival is sponsored annually to promote community spirit and to increase public awareness of the significant collaborative research initiatives and outreach efforts of the research centers, which are components of the FAMU College of Engineering Sciences, Technology and Agriculture (CESTA). Following is a mini-schedule of activities that will be included during the festival. Events Vineyard Run/Walk Contest (7:00 a.m.) Festival Official Opening (8:00 a.m.) Hot Air Balloon Ride (8:30 -11:30 a.m.) Grape Throwing Contest (10:00 a.m.) Wine Making Demo (10:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m.) Hula Hoop Contest (10:30 a.m.) Grape Stomping Contest (12:00 p.m.) Grape & Wine Sampling - Adults Only (1:00 p.m.) On-Going Events Trailer Rides & Vineyard Tours Pony Rides Petting Zoo Educational Exhibits Pick Your Own Grapes Grape Plants Raffle Food, Live Music & Dancers Registration for the festival is $2.00 donation per person. In addition to the registration fee, a minimal cost is applied for the following selected events: Run/walk- $5.00/adults only; Hot-air balloon ride- $10.00/adults, $5.00/children under 14; and the Florida Wine Sampling Session - $2.00/adult with ID. All funds collected will be donated to support student scholarships in FAMU/CESTA. The event will take place as scheduled, weather permitting. In case of inclement weather, the FAMU Grape Harvest Festival is subject to be changed to the following week.
