Description:
The NCSU Horse Feeding Short Course is designed to assist producers in the feeding management of their horse operations. Course material will be taught at an intermediate level to enhance introductory level information previously taught at county extension meetings. Special emphasis will be placed on the economics of feeding balanced diets to horses at different growth and production stages. The course in recommended for professional horsemen or recreational horse owners with a keen interest in advancing their management skills. Participants successfully completing the course will receive 0.7 Continuing Education Credits from North Carolina State University.
Course material taught in this session will include: digestive physiology, factors affecting digestion, determining your horse’s nutrient requirements, nutritional diseases, selecting grains and supplements, forage management, evaluating feed tags and supplements. Also included will be managing a feeding program for mature horses, performance horses, broodmares, foals, weanlings, yearlings and stallions. Participants will learn the basics of developing a balanced feeding program. A 200 page nutrition manual will be provided.
