Fruit variety trials at the University of Kentucky research farms have resulted in a list of recommended varieties for Kentucky gardeners. Several of these varieties are identified as minimal pesticide (MP) varieties, which means they will usually mature their fruit with fewer pesticide applications. Most other fruit types require a regular pest control program. The MP varieties have excellent apple scab resistance and varying levels of resistance to several other diseases, but they have no insect resistance.
Some of the better MP apple varieties to consider, in order of ripening date (early to later), are: Redfree, Liberty, Pixie Crunch, Enterprise, Goldrush, and Sundance.
