I want to know how to split and transplant an old-fashioned bleeding heart that has overgrown its space in the garden.

If you mean Dicentra spectabilis, it is difficult to divide. If it really needs dividing, do it carefully in early spring when you first see the plants popping out of the soil. Try to do it just before rain and when the temperature is cool to help the plants recover from the stress of dividing and replanting. If it dries out, it may go dormant before it even blooms. Dig the whole clump up carefully so as not to injure the tender roots. Then divide the clump into whatever size sections that you wish and replant them. You could also simply remove half of the plant and leave the other half in the ground.

The fringed leaf bleeding heart Dicentra eximia that blooms intermittently throughout the summer should be divided at the same time as Decentra spectabilis. It is easier to divide.
