FAQ #12009

Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

I just planted two new astilbe plants, and the blooms are almost brown (they were lavender). Should astilbes be deadheaded during the growing season?

Removing the spent flower heads (deadheading) will not extend or promote additional blooms in astilbe. Therefore, it is usually a matter of asthetics. Deadhead these newly planted astilbe so that they put energy into root growth rather than into seed formation. Astilbe do not self-seed readily, so seedlings should not be a big problem if you decide to leave the seed heads in future years.
