If I want to graft an apple tree, when should I plan to do it?

Whip grafting may be done in February and March using dormant rootstocks, which are protected from freezing until it is warm enough for them to be set outside. Other grafting techniques in addition to the whip graft are conventionally done from March through July. The time of grafting often depends on the variety being grafted and the grafting technique that is used.
