Some soaps can kill soft-bodied insects such as aphids, mites, leafhoppers, whiteflies, and thrips. These insecticidal soaps are usually made of potassium salts of fatty acids, which break down insect membranes, causing cellular damage and death. Some household soaps can also kill insects, but commercial formulations have been specifically designed for this purpose.
These products usually require thorough spray coverage and multiple applications. Use soaps with caution, as leaf injury is possible with certain plants.
Insecticidal soaps are registered pesticides, so always follow the label instructions.
