The plants may be four o'clocks (Mirabilis jalapa). Four o'clocks are colorful perennials (Zones 7b - 11) grown as annuals in the north. Flowers of various colors often appear on a single plant. They can be grown from seed planted directly in the garden or from transplants. Four o'clocks also develop tubers that can be dug in the fall and overwintered like other tender, summer-flowering bulbs. They self-seed readily. The plants, including the tubers, are poisonous.
