Estrous behavior is possible in healthy ovariectomized mares. This behavior can occur in mares that were ovariectomized either before or after they reached puberty, which indicates they are demonstrating estrus due to something other than learned behavior.
Research done in the late 1980s indicated that the adrenal glands of the mares are probably producing the hormones that are causing your mares to show estrus, even though they have been ovariectomized.
