It is possible to maintain a quality lawn without using chemicals or synthetic fertilizers. The single most important consideration is grass selection. Certain species, such as tall fescue, will perform better with low inputs. Organic fertilizers, such as composted manures, sewage sludge, and organic wastes can be used as an alternative to inorganic or synthetically derived products. Many diseases can be avoided by proper fertilizer timing. The best defense against weeds is a dense, healthy lawn. You may be required to remove some common weeds by hand, but in the case of viney weeds such as ground ivy or clover, some spot treatment with herbicides will be necessary.
