FAQ #1436

Should I use a product containing fertilizer and herbicide on my lawn?

Related resource areas: Gardens, Lawns & Landscapes

Many products are available that contain herbicides (weed killers) applied to the fertilizer granules. These products can be a convenient way of applying two materials at one time, but only if you need both products. Adequate fall fertilization will keep your lawn healthy in the spring without additional fertilizer. It is often not necessary, and even harmful, to apply a combination pre-emergent crabgrass preventer herbicide and fertilizer when you only want the herbicide. If the fertilizer causes excessive spring growth, the turf may be weakened in hot weather, favoring crabgrass growth. Most garden centers sell at least one granular herbicide product that has no (or a minimum amount of) nitrogen fertilizer.
