FAQ #1442

How do I control wild violet in my lawn?

Related resource areas: Gardens, Lawns & Landscapes

Chemical control of wild violet is best achieved anytime following spring green-up and before the first frost in the fall. Repeat applications using a broadleaf herbicide labeled for violet control (could contain triclopyr or 2,4-D, MCPP and dicamba).

Violets should be actively growing, not stressed by a lengthy dry period, when spot or broadcast spraying. Also, make sure lawn has not been recently mowed; you want the largest leaf surface possible for maximum herbicide effect. Follow the herbicide’s labeled directions exactly.

Contact your local Extension office for specific chemical recommendations.
