Injection site management is extremely important from a production and quality control standpoint. Follow label instructions. Avoid intramuscular (IM) injections whenever other labeled routes of administration are available. Use proper animal restraint. The leading cause of broken needles and tissue damage is improper restraint. All IM injections must be given in the neck. When administering subcutaneous (SQ) injections, pull the skin up (tenting technique), and place the injection in the neck. Another acceptable but less appropriate SQ site is behind the elbow in the elbow pocket.
