Edema can be caused by several different factors. First, hypoproteinemia or low blood protein in the animal which is commonly related to the large stomach worm (barberpole worm/Haemonchus contortus), malnutrition and stress of pregnancy, lactation and adverse weather conditions. Anemia can also be caused by infestation with the barber pole worm or any other blood sucking parasites (lice, mites, keds etc.). It can also be caused by other conditions including metabolic disorders and malnutrition. Weight loss is also caused by a variety of diseases including Johne's Disease, infestation with internal parasites, as well as others including not providing sufficient nutrients. With all these symptoms in a goat you will need to have a fecal egg count done to rule out internal parasites.
