How do I get my name off mailing and telemarketing lists?

Last Updated: March 06, 2008

Your name is “out there” on many lists (e.g., phone directories, warranty cards, public records, purchases, membership lists). To reduce the likelihood that your name will go on more lists, go to the National Do Not Call Registry at www.donotcall.gov/Register/Reg.aspx. The National Do Not Call Registry is managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency. This registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at this Web site. You can register your home or mobile phone for free.

Your registration will be effective for five years. When a telemarketer calls you at home, say, “Please put me on your do-not-call list.”

To receive fewer unsolicited credit card and insurance offers in the mail, call this toll-free number: 1-888-5opt-out, and follow the instructions on the recording. You can also use the secure Web site at www.optoutprescreen.com to remove your name from the marketing lists.
