FAQ #1764

What is the best way to get rid of poison ivy?

Related resource areas: Gardens, Lawns & Landscapes

Eradicating poison ivy is often difficult. Without the use of herbicides, there are very few options available. Hand pulling and digging out the roots is one option. But if you do that, remember to take extra care to remove the entire root because the plant can resprout from root fragments. You need to avoid skin contact by wearing gloves, long pants, and long sleeves while you work. Wash clothing and gloves immediately after use; separate from the family wash.

Herbicides are most effective in early summer and late fall before leaf color changes. Even with the best herbicide, repeated applications may be necessary. You can select a nonselective herbicide with the active ingredient glyphosate. A 2 to 3 percent spray solution is suggested to kill poison ivy. Products containing triclopyr are also effective. Triclopyr is selective, so grasses surrounding the poison ivy may not be killed. Before buying a product, check the label and make certain poison ivy is listed. Follow directions for use.
