Does feeding a horse three times a day instead of two improve the efficiency of feed utilization?

Related resource areas: Horses

No. Many studies have been conducted to determine if a horse will more efficiently use the same amount of feed when fed over three meals instead of two. All agree that the efficiency of digestion is not changed. However, it may still be a good idea to feed three times a day to reduce incidents of colic and boredom. A horse eating smaller meals more frequently is less likely to rupture a stomach. At the same time, boredom is reduced because they are chewing feed instead of wood, manes, tails, etc.
