FAQ #22868

Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

Our soil is very sandy. I was thinking of buying a truckload of black dirt from a landscaping supply yard. Is this a good idea? Can we just add it to the top and/or mix it in with our soil without risk?

You may find that you have added unwanted materials, such as clay or construction debris, to your lawn if you purchase so-called black dirt. Sandy soil is very porous, and you need to add organic material such as compost, peat, or other organic shredded materials. Whatever you do add must be thoroughly incorporated into the soil. DO NOT just spread it on top of your sand!

Depending on the size of your lawn, you may require several truckloads to material to make any difference.
