FAQ #23

Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

When buying hay, what factors should I consider in selecting hay for my horses?

Related resource areas: Horses

Most hays are purchased on visual appraisal. Hay that has a bright green color and a pleasant odor and is leafy with small stems and free of dust, mold, and foreign material is desirable. However, if you are buying a large quantity of hay (rather than a few bales), you should get a forage analysis on the hay, so you will know the actual nutritional value of the hay you are purchasing. The forage analysis will tell you the percent of protein, digestible energy, and many other characteristics that cannot be determined by sight.
