What do stereotypes have to do with uncertainty and how do they cause prejudice?

Related resource areas: Diversity Across Higher Education

In today's societies , almost all people are stereotyped ; for example even at schools children are classified as 'nerdy' , 'rich' , 'poor', 'fat' , 'thin' and numerous other classifications may arise from race ; however , when children grow older and become adults most have learnt to cope with their stereotype and will become productive citizens of society .

However stereotyping may have negative consequences for the poor or any other minority of a society since it prevents their progress through the ranks of society by creating uncertainty through prejudice leading to reduced opportunities for progress .
