UIP is the acronym for undegraded intake protein (UIP or bypass protein). In the 1996 NCR Nutrient Requirements for Beef Cattle, the crude protein fraction of a feed is divided into two components, and one of those components is UIP. A common name for UIP is bypass protein. The UIP component bypasses rumen breakdown by the bacteria in the rumen and can be broken down in the small intestine and absorbed across the intestinal wall into the blood system as amino acids or expelled.
