How is feeding a mule different than feeding a horse?

Related resource areas: Horses

There is limited information on the different requirements of mules versus horses. In data reported for mules at work, it appears that their energy requirement is about 10% lower than that for horses of similar body weight. We would suggest that for mules at maintenance you could decrease energy by 10%, and a similar reduction for working mules could also be used. You will need to monitor the mule's body weight or body condition to further refine your feeding practices.

I have horses. I have boarders with mules and friends with mules. I am a bit tired of hearing how alfalfa/grass mixture is so harmful to their mules, and yet the mules have a much more efficient digestive system. Any information would be helpful. Thank you!!
