The answer is a definite "maybe." The U.S. Census and U.S. Department of Commerce suggest that more and more consumers have access to and shop on the Web. In 2000, 51% of the U.S. population had a computer, and 41.5% had Internet access (U.S. Census 2000). Your customers might be looking for you online, too.
Your decision to use technology tools should be based on who the target market is and your determination of which tools are the best to reach that market. A Web site can make you available to your customers 24 hours a day from any location. Remember that a key factor to having a successful business is that your potential customers can find you and get their questions answered.
If you decide to have a Web site, you need to consider the factors that make a Web site an effective marketing tool.
Think of your Web site as an electronic business card. Key elements should include information about your product or service, contact information, business hours, and in some cases location.
To begin a Web site, research other firms that are like yours on the Web. What does their site offer? How can your site be different so it will stand out from the others? What does your business do that makes the Web an effective way to reach your customers? Which sites are easy to use, and which ones have features that are difficult to navigate?
Are you able to construct your own Web site, or do you need technical assistance? Can you afford to hire someone to help you set up your site? If you do seek assistance in establishing your Web site, be clear about your needs and expectations before you sign a contract with anyone to build your site.
In the beginning customers may have limited Internet access and/or use dial-up services. You want to make your site as user-friendly as possible. You can always expand the information and services available on your Web site as your business grows.
