Stress is very powerful, and too much stress can have a negative impact on our health. Often stress is due to time limitations, tasks we do not feel comfortable doing, or feelings such as worry.

It is good if you know the source of your stress and can ask for help. Even if you don't know the source, you can decrease the stress by simply doing things that put your mind and body in neutral and give you a break. Deep breathing and relaxation exercises have proven to be very effective. Even three minutes of deep breathing will slow your heart rate. Ten minutes of relaxation will de-stress the body and renew your energy. Most public libraries have numerous resources to borrow which may provide you with information and also help you relax.

Stress can also be an indicator of feelings that you have not been able to express. Caregivers at times are concerned that they are "doing the right thing" or have fears about the loss of their loved one. Caregiver support groups can be helpful in this case. Finding someone to talk to such as a counselor or pastor helps get the concerns out and begin to get a clearer perspective.

A resource you may find helpful is the Center on Aging Studies Without Walls through the University of Missouri-Kansas City and University of Missouri Extension.
