Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

I am concerned about slipping in the bathroom. What are some ways I can make the bathroom space safer?

Related resource areas: Family Caregiving

There are number of things that can be added to the space to help prevent slips and falls. They include:

• Slip-resistant, matte-finished, textured tile flooring
• Nonskid mat or strips on the standing area of the tub or shower
• Grab bars to assist in the shower/tub and toilet areas.
• Even lighting in the bathroom with a light switch located at the entry door

In addition, do not:
• Exit the bathtub or shower until all of the water is out of the tub/shower pan
• Use a towel bar as a substitute for a grab bar
