How can I find a facility for my parent when he/she doesn’t need nursing care, just a little help?
This is a difficult decision to make and one that hopefully you and your parent can make together. What you are asking about is called "assisted living."
An assisted living home is generally an apartment complex with staff who can provide as much help with daily living as needed but only limited or no nursing care. Often, they offer meals and housekeeping as well as limited transportation. An assisted living home may be a good choice for your parent because it offers privacy and independence in a supportive environment.
Before you choose a facility, it is important to understand what level of care your parent needs. Ask a representative from the local Area Agency on Aging (call Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116) to help arrange an assessment to find out what level of care is right.
