Antioxidants are substances found in food that can prevent damage to your body cells or repair existing damage. Some well-known antioxidants include vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, lycopene, and selenium. Antioxidants may also improve your immune function and, perhaps, lower your risk for infection and cancer.

Current recommendations for intake of antioxidants are to consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
