To save money when buying fresh fruits and vegetables, you can get them on sale at your grocery store or at your local farmers' market, or grow your own in a garden.

Fresh is important, but equally healthy are frozen and canned items that may be less expensive in general. They can be found on sale and are more available during all seasons. Food pantries and food banks are also available in many locations.

Also, for qualifying seniors, the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program provides coupons worth $20 to $50 for produce and herbs. These coupons can be used at farmers’ markets, roadside stands, and community agriculture programs.
