Respite care is temporary time off for caregivers or family members who are caring for someone who is elderly or someone who has disabilities or chronic illnesses.
Respite care can take place in the home, adult daycare center, assisted living facility, or nursing home. A respite provider can be a friend, neighbor, family member, or a paid care giver. The main objective is to provide caregivers with temporary substitute care. It is essential for care givers to take time away from their responsibilities to relieve stress and prevent burnout.
Respite care often takes place in the home. Someone comes to the home and sits or cares for the family member. However, some nursing homes or assisted living facilities may offer to care for someone for a day or weekend. Also, adult day care centers provide good respite for a caregiver.
