What are zoonotic diseases (diseases transmitted or shared) between animals and humans?

Diseases that can be transmitted (or shared) between animals and humans are called zoonotic (zoo-ah-NAH-tic). The Centers for Disease Control (http://www.cdc.gov) is an excellent resource on zoonotic diseases. Here is a list of some of the most common diseases transmissible between humans and animals:

Anthrax
Baylisascaris procyonis (Raccoon roundworm)
Brucellosis
Cat scratch disease
Contagious ecthyma
Cowpox
Cryptosporidial enteritis
Echinococcosis
Ehrlichiosis
Encephalitis (EEE, WEE, VEE)
Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli infection
Giardiasis
Hanta virus
Larva migrans
Leprosy
Leptospirosis
Listeriosis
Lyme disease
Mange
Monkeypox
Plague
Psittacosis
Q fever
Rabies
Ringworm
Salmonellosis
Toxoplasmosis
Trichinosis
Tuberculosis
Tularemia
Typhus
West Nile fever

Zoonotic diseases can also be transmitted through ectoparasites, such as fleas and ticks carried by the animal.
