What is the ideal concentration (%) of dry matter in the diet of high production cows? Why?

Related resource areas: Dairy

The recommended dry matter content of a total mixed ration (TMR) or diet is 45 to 55% dry matter. If the TMR is too dry (over 65% DM), add water to hold feed ingredients together and improve palatability and intake. If it is too wet (over 55% water), dry it out with drier feed ingredients (such as hay, soy hulls, barley, or other feed ingredients) needed to maintain nutrient balance.

No problem if moisture occurs with pasture; it is fermented feeds adding moisture to the ration that can lower feed intake.
