Would there be any value in adding buffers to starter diets?

Last Updated: August 29, 2007

I have not seen any data indicating buffer increase in rumen papallie development in calves. It is VFA production from dry calf starter, primarily propionate and butyric acids. Yeast culture has shown some benfits.

Data has not shown any added benefit to buffers in calf starters. Slower digested carbohydrate sources are the best means to minimize pH fluctuations in a calf. Sound management still the best additive.
