How do feeding practices need to be adjusted to switch to three times a day milking? At the moment, we are milking twice a day starting at 6 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. We feed hay, silage, and pellets around 10 kilos (22 lb) a day per cow.

If your cows follow the U.S. data, milk production should increase 3 to 4 kg (6.6 to 8.8 lb). There is no free milk; you will need to feed more nutrients to attain the higher milk yield. For us, each additional 3 kg of milk requires 1 kg of grain mix. If your 10 kg is correct for your current milk yield, then more forage and grain nutrients are needed. You should feed a total mixed ration free choice, or feed the pellets three times a day (at each milking split evenly) to reduce the risk of rumen acidosis.
