Spurs should only be used to reinforce a cue and not as a substitute for proper leg use. You should give the proper cue with your leg first and, if no response is given by the horse, then apply light spur pressure at first. Always use a light cue, and give time to respond before you apply harder pressure. Remember, you want your horse to respond to the lightest cue applied. The first time you use spurs, it would be best if the spurs were round or blunt with no sharp rowels. If you use a light cue the first time, your horse's reaction should not be too abrupt.
Unlike most other resources on the web, we have experts from Universities around the country ready to answer your questions.
