Our four year old mare constantly jumps out of her 20 acre pasture which she shares with three geldings. The fencing is 4 feet high in most areas but she has also jumped over the areas which are five feet. Would a martingale type of strap work to keep her from jumping over the pasture fence? How can I keep her in the pasture? The pasture itself is in good shape with lush grass.

One possible explanation is that the geldings are being aggressive toward the mare. If so, you will need to separate her from the horse(s) that are causing her to jump out of the pasture.

A martingale is not appropriate to use on a grazing horse. It is a piece of tack used to control a horse's head while one is riding a horse. Martingales are not designed for this use, and would be very unsafe to even consider in this instance.

If you must keep all the horses in the same paddock, you might find an electric fence useful to keep the mare from jumping out of the pasture. You might start by putting a strand of electric tape around the top of your fence to dissuade the mare. Resorting to electrifying the entire fence would be a possible next step if electrifying the top wire does not work.
