Ethical dilemmas arise when the needs of one group are pitted against the needs of another. There is no official standard for what is or is not an ethical business because standards vary across location, situation, and time. One component is legal obligations to follow. Other components are societal and personal standards.

Some tips in operating your business ethically include:
- developing a statement regarding your vision for business ethics. Ensure that employees, vendors, and customers are aware of your statement.
- treating your employees with respect and fairness.
- similarly, treating your customers the same way. When you get a complaint, respond quickly and take action. Include the customer in your decision making.
- making sure your advertising says what you mean and that you mean what you say.

Remember, ethics in your company starts at the top. Make ethics a part of your company image.
