What characteristics are used to class soil series for irrigation suitability?

Related resource areas: Cotton

USDA-NRCS county soil surveys provide information on detailed soil characteristics. A specific soil series is generally grouped into three irrigation categories which include: non-irrigable (N); conditional (C); and irrigable (I). The soils are classified based on the knowledge of whether irrigation will or will not benefit the irrigator economically and if irrigation may or may not decrease the productivity of the soil.
