Yes, soil particles as they are arranged into aggregates can become unstable under irrigation and thus may require special management. Movement of water into and within the soil is also partially dependent on soil structure. Soil structure may be altered both physically and chemically. Physical destruction of soil structure may result from compaction and tillage under adverse soil conditions (too much or too little soil moisture). Soil structure can be altered by organic matter content or chemically through the introduction of excessive sodium into the soil system. High sodium, in relation to calcium and magnesium may lead to poor soil structure resulting in decreased soil permeability.
