Get recommendations from friends, family, neighbors, or a Realtor you trust. Also, check with the local consumer protection office or Better Business Bureau to see if there are any complaints against the contractor. But remember, even if there have been no complaints filed, that is not a guarantee of reliability. Verify that the contractor has an appropriate license and insurance.
Ask about their training and experience with the specific task or job. Inquire about getting the names of three previous customers who have had similar work. Follow up by contacting the customers to determine their satisfaction with the work that was done.
Ask how long the contractor has been in business in the area. Are they likely to be in business in the future if there is a problem with the work? What type of warranty or guarantee is offered? How do they handle return calls if there are problems with the work or materials later on? Are they familiar with the local or area codes, inspection process, and zoning requirements? What is their payment policy? Is the final payment made after the job is completed and to the satisfaction of the customer? Do they provide a bid and a contract and for the job?
