If you consider that people need blank space (called white space) around images, you don't want to make the picture too large. You also want to make it large enough so it is easy to see and makes an attractive site. Since most people have their screen resolution set at about 1000 pixels across, it's a good idea to make your photos about 500 pixels wide.
