What should I do with my fuel tank if flooding is likely?

Related resource areas: Agrosecurity and Floods

A fuel tank can tip over or float in a flood, causing fuel to spill or catch fire. Cleaning up a house that has been inundated with flood waters containing fuel oil can be extremely difficult and costly. Fuel tanks should be securely anchored to the floor. If there is a shutoff valve at the tank, close this (turn clockwise). Remember to open this valve again when it is safe to do so. Make sure vents and fill line openings are above projected flood levels. Propane tanks are the property of the propane company. You will need written permission to anchor them. Ask whether the company can do it first. Be sure all work conforms to state and local building codes.

You should also shut off fuel supply valves to other appliances such as stoves, clothes dryers, and hot water heaters. Rapid flooding can "float" or topple some appliances, breaking fuel lines and creating a fire or explosion hazard.
