The black material on the tree is probably sooty mold, a fungal growth that grows on 'honeydew'. Honeydew is the excrement produced by aphids feeding on the tree leaves. This fungal growth (sooty mold) can be seen on many tree species on the trunk, branches, twigs and leaves.
