I am diabetic but have started drinking regular soft drinks again because my son e-mailed me about the dangers of aspartame and told me never to drink it again. Now my blood sugar is too high. What do you suggest I do?

Many circulated reports on the Internet about aspartame are bogus. Still, it is a personal decision whether or not to consume this alternative sweetener.

For a person with diabetes, consuming regular soft drinks is an unhealthy choice. These drinks provide no nutritive value other than calories in the form of quickly absorbed carbohydrates that can contribute to elevated blood glucose levels.

If you do not want to consume aspartame, you can choose soft drinks with another sweetener or drink water, club soda, or another low-carbohydrate beverage.
