Are saccharin and/or aspartame bad for you?

Related resource areas: Family Caregiving

No. Neither has been shown to be unsafe for human consumption.

Saccharin has been used for over 100 years with no apparent adverse effects, and it is considered to be a safe food ingredient.

Aspartame was extensively tested before it was approved as a food additive by the Food and Drug Administration in 1981.

As with any food or food ingredient, if you have an unpleasant reaction after consuming a sugar substitute, you can choose not to use it.
