Start teaching the horse to be caught by starting in a round pen. Take a rope, whip or halter and drive the horse around the pen. Every 2-4 rounds step back and allow the horse the opportunity to come to you. If the horse does not come to you, make him turn around and drive him around the pen the other way. Keep driving and turning the horse until he starts wanting to stop. When he comes to you allow him to stand still while you pet and rub on him. The concept is to teach the horse that the most comfortable place and place to rest is with you.

After a few days of this exercise the horse will start looking to you for rest rather quickly. When you accomplish this exercise in the round pen, move to a larger arena and eventually to the pasture. Soon the horse should come to you when you call. It is important that you not catch the horse and immediately ride him as that would be a negative reward for the horse. So petting should be the normal reward for being caught.
