FAQ #27059

I have a 1½-year-old Shetland pony and recently got a 3-year-old female miniature donkey. The pony has been gelded. I am having problems with the pony chasing and biting at the donkey whenever someone goes near her. He also doesn't share well when it comes to eating hay. Is this something that they will work out over time? They have been together for about three weeks.

It is difficult to answer behavior questions without first observing the horses in action.

From your described situation, we find it unusual that a donkey would give in to a pony or even a horse. Most donkeys, even miniature donkeys, will hold their ground and dominate or herd a young horse to establish pecking order.

We would suggest that you feed them separately to ensure that the donkey is receiving proper nutrition.
