Brucellosis is a disease that causes pregnant cows to abort their calves. It is also a disease of humans called undulant fever. It was widely eradicated from cattle in the 20th century by a national Brucellosis program that includes testing, vaccination, and rules on interstate movement of cattle. Unfortunately, the disease persists in some populations of wildlife, such as elk and bison. Contact your state veterinarian for details about the brucellosis status of your state and for information about requirements for interstate movement of cattle.
