We are installing grab bars in the bathroom. What kind of specifications should we look for?

Related resource areas: Family Caregiving

According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s Universal Bathroom Planning handbook, grab bars should:
• be 1¼" to 1½" in diameter,
• extend 1½" from the wall,
• have a slip-resistant surface, and
• support a load of 300 pounds.

Grab bars should be installed professionally to ensure that they will be safe for use.
