Why is a grazing management plan important?

Related resource areas: Animal Manure Management

A dense and vigorous grass stand is the most effective form of vegetative filter to remove nutrients and bacteria from runoff water. It is desirable that livestock graze for as much of their food supply as possible.

Proper grazing management is important in maintaining surface water quality. Improper grazing practices lead to contributions of sediment and bacteria as water quality problems. Proper management plans can reduce water quality problems and provide optimum livestock performance and plant resource conditions. Grazing management sustains forage production and improves utilization and animal distribution. Positive results include profitability and improved water quality, air quality, and wildlife habitat.
